Course Description

Course description: principles and methods of creating dynamic websites using Dreamweaver including the latest Web technologies: JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets, layers and behaviors, audio, video, and animation plug-ins. Techniques of authoring Web pages for different browsers including principles of designing, maintaining, and marketing successful websites. Assignments include CSS, layers, XML/RSS, and forms interaction with local and remote MySQL™ databases.

Goals and objectives:

Use Dreamweaver Version 8 / CS to generate interactive and multimedia content, including layers, behaviors, forms, databases, audio and video, and become a better webmaster or Web developer.

The course is an intermediate to advanced introduction to Dreamweaver. COIN74A is a recommended prerequisite. Students will come to this class with varied experience, and some may be using different versions (DW8, DWCS). Most of the screen shots are DW8; however you will be able to do the assignments for this course using Adobe DW CS3/CS4, or DW version 8.

In addition to needing your own copy of Dreamweaver (version 8 or Adobe CS - unless you are using the software on the school labs), you will need the latest Flash Player from Adobe. Also check your browser for QuickTime plug-in browser support.

I generally open up all lessons at the start of the class, and you will have about two or more weeks to complete each lesson. It is your responsibility to monitor the ETUDES Assignments Links for the due dates and specified times for submission of homework and to check the Announcements and Discussion Area for updates or revisions to the course content and schedule. There will be several days after your final project / portfolio is due when you are required to participate in a review and critique of a classmates' work. Once a homework link has expired, you may not be able to get full credit for your assignment even if it is uploaded to the Web. Please do not request extensions for submitting homework unless you have a *real* emergency.

Each week your assignments will be due on the date and time specified in the ETUDES-NG ASSIGNMENT LINK for that assignment. Any assignment turned in after the due date may not be accepted, - or it may be considered late and marked down up to one full grade. Please read the Homework Submissions page carefully.  You may be dropped from the course if you miss two or more homework submissions.

Please complete and upload your homework leaving plenty of time before the deadline. I can only assign points in ETUDES-NG through the appropriate submission fields for each assignment. I understand that the first couple of weeks you will have a lot of information on the ETUDES-NG interface in addition to your Dreamweaver work so I am flexible during this time and am very available to help you be successful early on in the course, so don't worry, I'm here to help you.

Please review Foothill College's Academic Dishonesty page with a link to our Academic Honor Code for Internet Based Courses.

Grading - Grading is based on assignments, forums postings and code reviews, final project / portfolio, and hard work. Each assignment is worth 25 to 50 points, and it is not unusual to receive a few extra points for extra effort. Please plan your time carefully as there are no incomplete grades available in this course.

A = 450 to 500 points (90% or more)
B= 400 to 449 points (80% to 89%)
C= 350 to 399 points (70% to 79%)
D=300 to 349 points (60% to 69%)
F = < 300 points (less than 60%)

I will withdraw you if I don’t see progress for a number of weeks, and / or if you do not respond by email within five business days to an inquiry about your status. Please keep me informed. International students please pay particular attention to your attendence, as once you are withdrawn you cannot be reinstated. There are no incomplete grades available in this class. My philosophy: Work hard, and ask questions when stuck. Work and collaborate with your peers. Focus on technical knowledge and skills first, design will come later.

Office hours: I am available by email practically 7 days a week, and by appointment on weekdays in the afternoon. I try to resolve questions by email and phone first, and then by office hours. Please ask questions in the ETUDES-NG forums, and email me for the fastest response. Try my email first at rdcormia@earthlink.net, or by office phone 650.949.7456. My home / office number is printed in the footer of my email; you may use it if you need an urgent issue resolved, but please call only during normal business hours. When corresponding with me by email, I will try to reply to all messages within one business day, and likewise I expect the same for you. Always put COIN74B in the subject line, and please use fresh (not recycled) subject lines for new topics.

Textbook

Textbook – there is no required textbook for this course, but I do recommend Dreamweaver CS4 - the Missing Manual. (purchase online or at a local bookstore) I also list online tutorials in the website.

Extra Credit

There are no 'formla' extra credit assignments, but you will often get extra credit for extra effort. In the final two weeks of class, you may build an XML sitemap for your website, and have it indexed with Google (using Google Webmaster Tools). You may also build an RSS file, including images, and link that to your website. Each of these activities is worth between 5 and 10 extra credit points.

Grading Rules

All assignments are due on the prescribed date, according to the schedule. Due to the rigidity of ETUDES-NG, there can be no 'extensions' on assignment submissions. If an assignment window has closed, it has closed. No assignments can be submitted after the final day of class, without exception. Incomplete grades are not available in this class. If you are nervous about grades, sign up with the pass / fail option. Remember that communication early and often is best to resolve hurdles.
