Lesson 1 - Configure Your Server Account



Welcome to Wreamweaver 8

Foothill College Labs provide web space for you to host your web site for the duration of this course. If you are in more than one course, you will get a unique account for each course in which you're currently enrolled. These accounts are referred to as "UNIX accounts" because they are hosted on a UNIX server.

In Fall 2003, the lab updated the server to only accept files that are sent through a protocol called Secure FTP. Dreamweaver MX2004 and Dreamweaver 8 are secure FTP (or SFTP) clients so you can use either of them with the school's server. Previous versions of DW are not SFTP.

If you are not using Dreamweaver MX 2004 or Dreamweaver 8, you will not be able to use Dreamweaver to send files to the UNIX server. Therefore, I suggest you upgrade to DW 8 using your student discount or find an alternate web host such as FREE WEB HOSTS or use an account with your own ISP (such as comcast, sbcblobal, earthlink, etc.).

Contact your ISP for instructions on how to ftp your files to your server account. You will need your ISP account name, password, and ftp address and instructions.

If you would like to use the school's UNIX account for the next 12 weeks, follow the rest of the instructions on this page.

If you've registered for this class, an account has been set up for you. Each student in this class has been assigned a folder within the folder for this class. The link to this class on the server should be: http://krypton.fhda.edu/coin074a02w/ The physical class folder is http://krypton.fhda.edu/coin074a01/ You will notice a folder with your last name, and perhaps one or two initials of your first name (which, by the way, is your username). If you click on the folder with your name, you will see something like this:

Please remember, you will be using the public_html/ folder for all of your assignments. (This will be explained further in Lesson 2.) To obtain your user name and password, go directly to https://orion.fhda.edu/ and enter your last name and student ID number.

Be sure to write down your username and password. This will be very important when you set up your site in Dreamweaver, which you will use for the duration of the class.

You only need to acquire your username and password. You do not need to use an outside FTP program as the instructions suggest. You do NOT need to set up a Foothill email account.

PROBLEMS with your UNIX ACCOUNT: You can Telnet but not FTP  (this applies to problems you might encounter when uploading files in Lesson 2)

It might be your firewall. A student sent this information. "The problem was entirely on my side. Within the past two weeks I'd added both DSL line and Norton Personal Firewall. I was blocking out communication from the UNIX server. As soon as I reconfigured the firewall to allow info from losaltos.fhda.edu to access my machine, everything worked fine." You may have to select the Passive FTP checkbox in the DW settings when you set up or edit your remote server information.

P.S. Why do you have to do this? You do this so that your local files can be transferred to the remote server. Once they are on the server, we can use an http address and view the files as web pages over a live Internet connection.
