COIN74A - Assignment Three

DW Cover

This assignment has several tasks.

You will create homework artifacts to turn in as your assignment. Make sure to use HW.htm as a guide.

Create several web pages with required formatted content - submitted to UNIX accounts, then have your code review. On the home page write the assignment number or name such as Homework 3, and the name(s) of the classmate(s) who reviewed your code.

Submit the HW.htm URL in the submit box in the Tasks, Tests and Surveys link of ETUDES. For more information on how to do this visit the How to Submit Homework page.

Work in your hw site and include the following in at least 1 of the 4 pages you submit for homework:

Extra Credit: Create a photo album using Dreamweaver and Fireworks. To create it select the Commands menu on the Dreamweaver menu bar and then select Create Web Photo Album... (Commands>Create Web Photo Album...) You may also use a gallery generator of your choice. Make sure to mention this and link to it from HW.htm. If you don't have Fireworks then you may use the lab at the school to create it.

Include on all pages:

Font Sizes From E. Castro's HTML for the World Wide Web:

"The value you choose for BASEFONT is always relative to the default size set in the user's browser. A value of 3 will display text at the same size as the browser's default size. If the browser's default size is 12 points (which is the norm), valuers 1 to 7 to BASEFONT correspond to 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, 24, and 36 respectively. If the browser's default size is 14, the point sizes jump up accordingly. Windows machines ten to display text larger than Macs. If you use Windows, be aware that the text will probably appear smaller on a Mac and vice-versa." As we get further along in the course, we will not use points for font sizes.  We will use ems.  For now, continue to use points or pixel sizes for fonts.

Final Project

I want you to create a fully functioning professional website for the final project. Some students have an idea of a website at the onset of the course and start using their content and assets for the homework assignments. Some students have no idea at the beginning and just want to learn how to use the tools of DW. Some students have sites already created that they want to import into DW to modify and make over.

The final project has to be a site based on the 3 project themes stated in the final project storyboard page which you'll define in lesson 6. What I DON"T want is a site that just shows linked homework assignments. You may not want to use DW navigation bar in your final project. You may prefer to use a contact.html form rather than an email link, etc. Assignments are simply assignments in which you demonstrate your comprehension and application of techniques and features covered in the lessons.  A website is a totally integrated site based on a theme, common elements, structure, usability The Final Project for this course will fulfill the required listed competency matrix.

Final project - Thoughts about your Proposal

What is the purpose of your site?

Who is your target audience? Be as specific as possible about their technology requirements and design to them. Will they be tech savvy having the most up to date computers, internet connections, sound cards, memory and processing speed? Or are they on 14.4 or 28.8 modem connections? Design with your audience in mind. Will they have 15" monitors in 256 colors or multimedia computers with 19 or 21" monitors in millions of colors?

What is the scope of your site? How broad will your site be? How much info do you want to cover? Can you create it in modules and add more as needed after the course?

What kind of navigation or information architecture will you use? Will you use consistent navigation on all pages through a left vertical bar, nav bars on top/bottom/ both?

What is your color scheme, font selection, etc? Do some research and be specific about colors, fonts, etc.

Are you designing for a particular screen resolution and if so, what and WHY? Participate in the forums special topic: "the myth of 800 x 600".

How will this information affect your design? Think hard about these issues. Think about your purpose for having an Internet presence. Will it be a part of an entire marketing package including collateral (printed material)?, television ads? direct mail campaigns, etc. How will you distinguish your company or services from others on the web? What will make you credible? Why should I believe what you say on the web? etc. How can you make your site look professional and feel personable?

Address these questions when designing your storyboard and creating your proposals. PREPARE YOUR PROPOSAL AND STORYBOARD AS IF YOU WERE DESIGNING THE SITE FOR A REAL-WORLD CLIENT assuming you will need their sign-off before beginning your work. You may be your own client so be sure to review details and only signoff on this stage of development if you're convinced that you have covered all your bases - thoroughly! You will submit a professional storyboard in assignment 6 but start thinking and preparing for your storyboard now.

Continue to collect assets. If you don't have access to an image creation program, you can get quality photographic images from the web for non-commercial purposes at sites such as:
