COIN74A - Assignment One

DW Cover

This assignment has several tasks.

Please submit a message in the ETUDES HOMEWORK 1 ASSIGNMENT LINK - including your class introduction - when you have completed these tasks!

Task 1 - Read the Quick Start information

Read all the information about ETUDES, the FORUMS, Copyright, Academic Dishonesty, Grading Criteria. Read any / all the ANNOUNCEMENTS in the FORUMS. Make sure that you can log into the forums okay, and save that password!

Task 2 - Class Introductions

In Etudes-NG please submit a brief intro to the FORUMS>INTRODUCTIONS topic, and also to me in the assignment one window (not as a private message). Include your name, your background as it relates to graphic or web design or computer classes, why you are taking this course, your operating system, speed of internet connection, which browser flavor and versions you prefer as your primary and secondary browser, your monitor's resolution, your current URL if you have one and would like to share it with the class. I read every introduction as it really helps me to get to know you faster!

Task 3 - Permission to display your work

Please indicate permission to display your work during the course (we do this very infrequently).

Task 4 - Install DW on your computer

Adobe provides a free 30-day trial version. After the 30 day trial, you have to purchase it or use the computers in the school lab. You can NOT download a second free 30-day trial version. You should use Dreamweaver CS4 in this class. If you are not able to get CS4 then use CS5.

Task 5 - Install any required plugins (QuickTime, Flash Player and Shockwave Player)

If you haven't installed QuickTime (and desire the ability to see embedded movies) please go to: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ Likewise, you should also have Flash and Shockwave players installed http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/. (Please be very careful installing any software, read the license completely, and avoid installing the Yahoo! toolbar).

Task 6 - Get Account information of your CTIS UNIX account

Find out your username and password of your CTIS UNIX account. Get your account information

The CTIS web server uses secure FTP (SFTP). If you are not going to use Dreamweaver to copy your files to the server then you will need an FTP program that uses secure FTP. For more information on this go to the Foothill CTIS HowTo Site: http://www.foothill.fhda.edu/ctis/howto. To copy an FTP program go to CTIS Unix Help, Documentation & FAQ Pages: http://www.foothill.edu/ctis/howTo/SFTP.php.

Also see this link http://fgamedia.org/faculty/rdcormia/COIN74A/1C_Unix_Server.htm for more detailed instructions.

To FTP using Dreamweaver a site must first be created which is shown in the lecture for lesson 2 - Site Definition. Once the site has been created files may be copied to the server. Follow the lesson for lesson 2 - Site Navigation to learn how to use Dreamweaver's Files Panel as your FTP client.

If you have any problems with your UNIX server account, email Luis Barreto: barretoluis@fhda.edu - I cannot help resolve any issues with your UNIX account (although I can test the access with your user name and password) so please contact Luis directly. Even though I state this clearly several places, students still come to me with their UNIX problems. Please go to Luis first!

Task 7 - Let me know that you have done all this!

When you have completed your introduction in the forums (which students see), go back to ETUDES Assignments, Tests, and Surveys, Assignment One and paste that introduction for me to see. Also, let me know that you have installed Dreamweaver, the plug-ins, and have your CTIS Unix account.
