Grading

Assignments and Projects should be submitted on or before the due date. If directions are not clear to you, please post to the ETUDES forum to clarify directions in order to submit on time and meet the requirements of the lesson. Do a search on the forums to see if there is already a post on your topic. Late projects will always be accepted, but they might be reduced by one grade. I recommend reading my online lecture notes before doing any associated homework. I don't want you to be frustrated if there is any confusion, so if you still have questions, please email me, and be as specific as possible in the subject line (include COIN72 of course) .

Assignments

Projects are graded on how well they meet and exceed criteria and requirements and illustrate understanding of techniques and tools used to create the desired effect. The following items are used in evaluating final projects:

Ability to follow instructions and satisfy the requirements
Purpose or concept of design (function of a website feature)
Composition and layout, color scheme, unity of form, style, elements
Dynamic movement, using Javascript and or layers
Focal point (resting place for the eye)
Integration of text as a design element rather than an afterthought
Purposeful application / integration of multimedia
Optimized properly for distribution on the web (avoid browser conflicts)
Finalized and prepared properly for distribution in print or in other applications
Comprehension of commands and techniques of the authoring program (photoshop, flash, director, etc.)
Text files describing concept, development process, etc. (from storyboard through final execution)

Attendance

Students should particpate in all online sessions, except for special pre-arranged circumstances or emergencies.
Students missing more than 2 assignments in a row may be dropped by the instructor. For online classes, this means if you get a zero and/or don't submit 2 homework assignments, you will be dropped or get a "W" or if you haven't logged on for a specified period of time you will be dropped or get a "W".
Students taking classroom course (when offered) who do not attend the final class session may have their grade reduced by one grade. The last session is usually a review and critique with analysis and discussion of student projects. It is a good place to summarize and see theory into practice. It's also rewarding to view the work of classmates over an entire quarter or semester. Be there! For online courses this means that you must participate in the peer reviews and critiques after the final projects have been submitted and viewed.

Additional Factors the Effect Grades

Student showed exceptional classroom participation in one or more of the following:

Assisting other students with their work
Using the discussions to create dialog about the current project or info relevant to the course
Shared techniques or tips learned in other courses with students, etc.
Attend outside lectures and/or workshops on the subject
A positive attitude, especially in email communications

Each course subject and lesson will have specific criteria mentioned in the lesson requirements for that project.

Stuff and Bother

You are registered for a letter grade unless you fill out a Pass/No Pass option card with the Registrar by the required date. A grade of A, B, or C receives a Pass. If you receive a D or F, you will receive a No Pass.

To take the class Pass/No Pass, fax your request to the admissions and records office. Fax: 650-949-7048. There is currently no way to request Pass/NoPass online. Check the Academic calendar for the dates in which this has to be done. The basic guideline is: Fall/Winter/Spring - Friday of the fourth week of instruction and Summer - Friday of the second week of instruction.

Regardless of status, students are expected to complete all work, take all tests and maintain regular attendance (participation in the class discussions, lessons, etc.) or they will be dropped or assigned a "W".

There will be no incomplete grades given except for medical emergencies (and you must meet the requirement of 80% of your work submitted). It is the responsibility of each student to monitor the academic calendar.

Back up all your work at every stage of development and keep copies of all homework assignments and projects that you submit to me. Excuses of lost work, crashed systems, disk errors, etc. are not acceptable reasons for not turning in assignments on time.

Late homework and lack of attendance or participation may result in a loss of grade. Students who don't attend the final session of in-class or online courses may receive a penalty in the form of a grade loss.

Final Grades are based on Assignments, Attendance, Collaboration, Final Projects, and a Positive Attitude.
