Business and Marketing Plans

Marketing strategy and tactics are designed to accomplish the strategic goals of the business plan. The best business plans will have an integrated marketing plan, and the best marketing plans will directly address the goals of the business plan. We refer to that in assignments seven and eight, where you develop a marketing campaign to achieve a particular goal. The metrics used in these programs can be sales oriented, market share focused, or perhaps a members goal if you are a community portal, and / or donations if you are a non-profit organization.

If you have never developed a business plan, for this exercise focus on a two page executive summary, stating the mission of the organization you are working for, the target industry you are in, the unique value you will provide, and your product sales or other goals. Talk about what your marketing and sales strategy will be, and how you plan to accomplish those goals. Include funds, resources, and general approach to tactics.

Create a very small spreadsheet that shows your business goals, and numerically, how your marketing and sales plan will get you there. If business development is needed, talk about what what partnerships are required, and how you will go about securing them. The key to a successful business plan, is how believable your story is, and that builds on how achievable your marketing and sales targets are.

For this assignment, focus on understanding the business goals of whatever organization you plan to work with are. That could be retail, or not, and it might just be increasing a member base. Whatever those goals are, think about how you'll use the strategies, tactics, and techniques that you learned in this course. You may not feel very confident in this knowledge, but just having a foundation to start with is a much better place than no strategy.

If an executive summary of a business plan is not what you are able to achieve, you may prepare, instead, a 1000 word summary of what you learned during this course, and how you plan to apply it to Web marketing.

This assignment will be evolving over the course of the quarter, and will be complete on or about November 15th.
