COIN72 - Lesson 12

Web Marketing for Dummies

Technology Trends and Mobile Marketing

Technology is the driver of so many facets of telecommunications, the Internet, and especially mobile social technology. Mobile marketing is fueled by the convergence of targeted messaging (place) and mobile commerce, also known as m-commerce. New organizations are popping up everywhere for mobile:

From Wikipedia, mobile marketing is "meant to describe marketing on or with a mobile device, such as a cell phone, and more broadly defined as “the use of the mobile medium as a means of marketing communication" [ref] or "distribution of any kind of promotional or advertising messages to customer through wireless networks". In the models were are developing in social computing, we diagram this as the broad intersection of GPS aware / mobile / social technology, wireless (pervasive) networks, and the overlay of personal behavior, behavioral profiles, and the analytics that combine real time presence with targeted messaging. All of this is also a subset of "calm technology" a phrase coined by the late Mark D. Weiser at Xerox PARC, related to pervasive computing, networks and sensors.

In November 2009, the Mobile Marketing Association updated its definition of Mobile Marketing: Mobile Marketing is a set of practices that enables organizations to communicate and engage with their audience in an interactive and relevant manner through any mobile device or network. [ref]. Mobile marketing is much more that place aware (GPS aware) targeted messaging, it attempts to build semantics or profile intelligence into the predicted and observed behavioral response, and decision support, for mobile users who need just in time information to make real-time decisions for products, services, and navigation.

Mobile Marketing / Mobile devices

Mobile marketing is growing at an exponential and accelerating rate with iPhones and Android smart phones, tablets, and decreasing costs of GPS enabled navigation systems in personal transportation. Combing 'place' with 'mobile' and Semantic Web applications is bringing about a whole new element to the intersection of social, mobile, commerce, and marketing.
